This site is primarily dedicated to documenting the problems and progress in Guatemala. While we are committed to ending violence against women and femicide around the world, at this time we focus on Guatemala. This site emerges from a August 2009 human rights delegation focused on the Guatemalan Human Rights Commission For the Women's Right to Live! campaign. Starting with Guatemala as a focal point acknowledges that the nation has the highest rate of femicide in the Western Hemisphere. However, that fact is often missing from critical conversations about the killing of women simply because they are women. Often times, we hear about problems of honor killings in the Middle East or "bride burning" in India. These and other examples are very important and not to be dismissed. However, the women of Guatemala are often overlooked. It is our intent to bring these facts to the forefront of discussion because the lessons of Guatemala inform us about women, conflict, and change.
